Settling...

That's what this season feels like. Settling into our new home, settling into this new life, and settling into these new seasons. The harvest (small but mighty) is in, our home is starting to feel comfortable, and the farmer's markets and craft shows will soon be coming to an end for this year.

Fall in the Blue Ridge Mountains is absolutely stunning. There's this anticipation for the leaves to change. You can feel Summer start to slip into Fall with chilly nights and ever cooler days until one day the trees just explode with color and you know it's only a matter of time before Winter shows up. That's where we are now. The trees that were vibrant with fiery shades of yellow, red, and orange are now rapidly shedding their foliage into fluffy piles that flurry on the roads.

I was surprised to feel a little sad this week... there's an odd feeling of loss associated with watching that type of beauty fade. And to be honest, Winter has me a little nervous. I've never lived in snow and I'm not quite sure what to expect. But... we're prepared with a ton of wood, I have snow tires that will be going on my SUV next week, and I've decided to take up embroidery as my "Winter craft". You can't get the blues when you're embroidering cute little flowers on all the things, right?

Until then, I'll just be over here making elderberry syrup
, hitting the markets on the weekends, and doing my best to soak up these last few weeks of Fall in the mountains.
